Adhan vs Iqamah

Adhan

The public call to prayer, broadcast aloud from the mosque to announce that the prayer time has begun.

Iqamah

The second, shorter call made inside the mosque just before the congregation lines up to pray.

In Doha mosques, the iqamah is typically called 15 to 25 minutes after the adhan, varying by mosque and prayer. Fajr azan time Doha usually has the longest gap to iqamah (about 20 to 25 minutes); Maghrib azan time the shortest (about 5 to 10 minutes). There is no single official iqamah time in Qatar; exact timing varies by mosque, so check your local masjid.

Mosques Broadcasting the Azan in Doha

Major mosques across Doha broadcast the azan through loudspeakers at each of the five daily prayer times, including the Grand Mosque (Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque), Education City Mosque, and Katara Mosque. See the full directory of mosques in Doha for Jumu'ah timing at each one.

Frequently Asked Questions

The adhan is the Islamic call to prayer, recited aloud from the mosque before each of the five daily prayers. A muezzin calls it to announce that the prayer time has entered. It consists of seven phrases declaring the greatness of God and inviting worshippers to prayer and success. In Doha, mosques broadcast it through loudspeakers.

Today in Doha the adhan is called at Fajr 4:19 AM, Dhuhr 11:19 AM, Asr 2:36 PM, Maghrib 5:02 PM, and Isha 6:32 PM AST. These are the official calling times calculated with the Qatar method (Umm al-Qura based). The schedule updates daily.

The Fajr adhan adds the phrase "As-salatu khayrun min an-nawm" (Prayer is better than sleep), repeated twice after "Hayya ala al-falah". This addition is called tathwib. It reminds people that rising for the dawn prayer is better than remaining asleep. It is recited only in the Fajr adhan, not the other four.

The adhan is the public call announcing that prayer time has entered, broadcast from the minaret. The iqamah is a second, shorter call made inside the mosque immediately before the congregation stands to pray. There is no single official iqamah time in Qatar; in Doha mosques, the iqamah follows the adhan by roughly 15 to 25 minutes, giving worshippers time to arrive.

The adhan is called five times a day in Doha, once for each obligatory prayer: Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha. On Fridays, the Dhuhr adhan precedes the Jumuah congregational prayer. Each adhan marks the start of that prayer's time window. A sixth call, the iqamah, precedes each congregation separately.

Adhan times are standardised across Doha by the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, so mosques call within a minute of each other. Minor differences occur because some muezzins begin a few seconds apart. The iqamah, however, varies more widely between mosques, typically by 15 to 25 minutes after the adhan.

Doha uses the Qatar method (Umm al-Qura based), identified as method 10 in the Aladhan API. It sets Fajr and Isha at an 18 degree twilight angle and uses standard shadow length for Asr. The timezone is Arabia Standard Time, UTC+3. Qatar does not observe daylight saving time, so times stay fixed year-round.

10 Jumādá al-ūlá 1448 AH is today's Hijri date. The Islamic lunar calendar has 12 months, each 29 or 30 days. A Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, so dates shift earlier each solar year.

The full monthly adhan schedule is on this page. Scroll to the table listing all five adhan times for every day of the month, with the Hijri date and today's row highlighted. Use the month and year dropdowns to view past or future months.

The next adhan in Doha is Dhuhr at 11:19 AM AST, shown with a live countdown at the top of this page. The countdown ticks every second and resets automatically once each adhan time passes. After the Isha adhan, the counter moves to the next day's Fajr.

Yes, this page includes an audio player to listen to a full adhan recitation. Press play on the "Listen to the Adhan" player. The recording lets you hear the seven phrases of the call to prayer. The Fajr adhan adds the tathwib phrase, which is noted separately in the adhan text below.
